SPECIAL PROJECT OF XXVII RUSSIAN ANTIQUE SALON

«SAMURAIS: A WAY OF BRUSH AND SWORD»

Organizer: Tanto Gallery

Traditional cooperation with museums and the largest galleries results in Special project. This year it devoted to Samurai thematic. Organizers and foundation «Heritage of the East» present the project «Samurais: a way of brush and sword» - Japanese art from the private collections of Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Exposition of rarity graphics and arts and crafts items of 19th century presents varied traditional art techniques, acquaints with traditional Japanese art and, above all, shows the amazing world of Japanese warriors-philosophers.

The aim of the project is to show the world in the perception of a samurai – a paradox personality with amazing combination of incongruous traits. On the one hand it is a cruel skillful warrior, giving no quarter to his rival. On the other hand he is a philosopher and a poet, being able to percept beauty in its finest state.

But for all that military techniques of samurais inseparably linked with such fine arts as calligraphy, sumi-e, prosody, tea ceremony, etc. Meditation and utter mental concentration help samurais to percept and comprehend the very core of things and acquire self-control. According to eastern philosophy, the outer world will change only when a person changes his inner world, and it is the only victory submitted to him.

The collection contains swords and armor created by famous masters for outstanding daimio – samurai-commanders. The diamond of the collection is the armor possibly belonged to the most odious figure in Japanese history – Oda Nobounaga, a genius strategist, who opened a new stage in the history of Japan.

Also the collection includes art rolls, xylographs, screens, ceramics and bronze items, furniture... All these things help us to see the world in the perception of samurais, and give us the possibility to comprehend this unique philosophy, which values the devotion to lofty ideals over the life itself.
